Transcript of diary kept in 1863 by Thomas Armstrong, Company E,
_________ Iowa Volunteers. (Original diary in Dad's cedar chest.
Spelling and punctuation as in diary.)

 

November, 1863

November, Sunday, 1.

We moved camp I was mustered.

Monday, 2.

I was on fatigue at the breast works.

November, Tuesday, 3, 1863.

On camp gaurd.

Wednesday, 4.

Came off gaurde at 8 o'clock.

Thursday, 5.

On fatigue at the ordinance department rained all day.

November, Friday, 6, 1863.

On picket gaurd the weather is very fair.

Saturday, 7.

Came of picket at 10 o'clock and was wanted shortly after but refused to go.

Sunday, 8.

On duty to ditch a stable at Brigade head quarters.

November, Monday, 9, 1863.

On picket the weather was very cold and frosty at night.

Tuesday, 10.

Came off gaurd at 10 o'clock and was wanted for fatigue

shortly after but refused to go.

Wednesday, 11.

On fatigue at ordinance department.

November, Thursday, 12, 1863.

On picket gaurde.

Friday, 13.

Came of gaurd and wrote a letter home.

Saturday, 14.

Nothing of importance.

November, Sunday, 15, 1863.

On picket gaurd. A Negro got killed by smoking in a Magazine where there was some loos powder which exploded.

Monday, 16.

Came of gaurd. The Rebells tried to shoot the Vidette last night but failed.

Tuesday, 17.

Weather warm and pleasant.

November, Wednesday, 18, 1863.

We sighned the pay roals for September and October.

Thursday, 19.

On picket gaurde.

Friday, 20.

Came off gaurde. We received two months pay for Sept. and Oct. Rained this morning.

November, Saturday, 21, 1863.

Weather tolerable cold. I sent ten dolars home in a letter.

Sunday, 22.

Nothing of importance.

Monday, 23.

Our Brigade gaurde. Rained all day and all night.

November, Tuesday, 24, 1863.

Came of gaurd this morning. Weather cold and cloudy.

Wednesday, 25.

Weather clear and cold.

thursday, 26.

One man detailed to gaurde prisoners to Alton. Sent 10

November, Friday, 27, 1863.

Another man detailed to gaurde Prisoners to Alton.

Saturday, 28.

On picket. Weather very cold.

Sunday, 29.

Came off picket. Fired at the Target for the first time. Weather cold.

November, Monday, 30, 1863.

Weather clear and warm turned cold at night. I am detailed for picket guarde tomorrow.
