Transcript of diary kept in 1863 by Thomas Armstrong, Company E,
_________ Iowa Volunteers. (Original diary in Dad's cedar chest.
Spelling and punctuation as in diary.)

 

August, 1863

August, Saturday, 1.

I was detailed again to go to Yongs point for our tents.

August, Sunday, 2, 1863.

I returned to camp with the tents and Bagage.

Monday, 3.

We pitched our tents and fixed up our camp. I drew Clothing.

Tuesday, 4.

I was Fatigue worked all day.

August, Wednesday, 5, 1863.

We sighned the Pay Roals for the months of May and June.

Thursday, 6.

We receive two months Pay for May and June the Alotment is stoped.

Friday, 7.

Nothing of importance.

August, Saturday, 8, 1863.

We drill from 7 to 9 a.m.

Sunday, 9.

On gaurde at Brigade Headquarters.

Monday, 10.

I came off gaurde and wrote a letter home and put $15 in it.

August, Tuesday, 11, 1863.

Nothing of importance.

Wednesday, 12.

Nothing of importance transpired.

Thursday, 13.

Nothing of importance transpired.

August, Friday, 14, 1863.

Nothing of importance.

Saturday, 15.

Nothing of importance.

Sunday, 16.

Nothing of importance.

August, Monday, 17, 1863.

Nothing of importance.

Tuesday, 18.

Nothing of importance.

Wednesday, 19.

Nothing of importance.

August, Thursday, 20, 1863.

Orders to march tomorrow.

Friday, 21.

Left camp at noon and got in the boats at dark.

Saturday, 22.

Woke up at Goodriches Landing, LA 50 miles up the river from Page 18, Armstrong Diary

Vicksburg. We disembarqued.

August, Sunday, 23, 1863.

We marched 10 miles. The weather was very hot several men Sunstruck.

Monday, 24.

March 7 miles to Bayou Mason we stoped to bridge it.

Tuesday, 25.

We marched 17 miles and stoped near a Lagoon. Rattle snakes very plenty.

August, Wednesday, 26, 1863.

We marched 16 miles and camped in a Rebell camp where they had fixed up to stay all summer at a place called oak ridge.

Thursday, 27.

We marched 16 miles.

Friday, 28.

We marched 8 miles and arrived at Monro the new Rebell Capital of La.

August, Saturday, 29, 1863.

We started back as rations were getting short. We marched 25 miles and camped at oak ridge. I was on picket duty.

Sunday, 30.

We marched 10 miles and camped on river Beath.

Monday, 31.

We marched 22 miles and arrived at Bayou Mason by one o'clock. We were mustered in the afternoon.
