Transcript of diary kept in 1863 by Thomas Armstrong, Company E,
_________ Iowa Volunteers. (Original diary in Dad's cedar chest.
Spelling and punctuation as in diary.)

 

June, 1863

June, Monday, 1.

We stay here for two or three days to rest and to draw Clothing.

Tuesday, 2.

We drew Clothing to day.

June, Wednesday, 3, 1863.

We received orders to march at five o'clock tomorrow morning.

Thursday, 4.

We took up the line of march at the appointed time. We marched to the vicinity of General McPherson's headquarters. At four o'clock we went in to camp.

Friday, 5.

Nothing of importance during the day at night two com went out to build a fort.

June, Saturday, 6, 1863.

Two companys went out to night and finished the fort and put the guns in.

Sunday, 7.

Not much firing to day.

Monday, 8.

Very heavy firing today.

June, Tuesday, 9, 1863.

At 11 o'clock Company D and E went out to make a road to the Page 13, Armstrong Diary

front. We returned at 4 o'clock.

Wednesday, 10.

Rained all day. One Com went out on fatigue.

Thursday, 11.

I was on Brigade headquarters gaurde to day.

June, Friday, 12, 1863.

We moved camp to where there was plenty wood and water.

Saturday, 13, 1863.

My 20th Birthday. We have orders to go to the rear for Picket duty for four days.

Sunday, 14.

We are out six miles, three companys in a place

June, Monday, 15, 1863.

Nothing of importance.

Tuesday, 16.

June, Thursday, 18, 1863.

Friday, 19.

Saturday, 20.

Six hours heavy Cannonading by 300 cannons. 8,000 shells sent into Vicksburg.

June, Sunday, 21, 1863.

Nothing of importance to day.

Monday, 22.

Orders to be ready to march at any moment.

Tuesday, 23.

Co. E was detailed to gaurde the Hospittal and to do Picket duty. The rest of the Reg- marched at six o'clock for black river.

June, Wednesday, 24, 1863.

Thursday, 25.

General Logan blowed up the largest Rebell for and the stormed it and took one half, the Enemy holds the other half.

Friday, 26.

The fighting continues very heavy by throwing hand grenades and shell back and forth from one trench to another.

June, Saturday, 27, 1863.

No advantage gained yet the fighting continues very heavy.

Sunday, 28.

Logan is underminding the half of the fort that is helled by the Rebbs so as to blow that up.

Monday, 29.

Nothing of importance to day.

June, Tuesday, 30, 1863.

Nothing of importance during the day about 10 o'clock heavy explotions in the direction of Vicksburg.
