Transcript of diary kept in 1863 by Thomas Armstrong, Company E,
_________ Iowa Volunteers. (Original diary in Dad's cedar chest.
Spelling and punctuation as in diary.)

 

December, 1863

December, Tuesday, 1.

Went on gaurd at Brigade Headquarters.

Wednesday, 2.

Came off gaurd at eight o'clock.

December, Thursday, 3, 1863.

We got the new of the Battle of Lookout Mtn.

Friday, 4.

I received a letter and a pair of socks from home.

Saturday, 5.

Went on picket gaurde.

December, Sunday, 6, 1863.

Came off gaurd at 10 o'clock. Fired at the Target, Missed it.

Monday, 7.

I done some washing.

Tuesday, 8.

Went on picket gaurde.

December, Wednesday, 9, 1863.

Came off gaurde fired at the target and missed it.

Thursday, 10.

Weather pleasant.

Friday, 11.

Went on picket gaurde.

December, Saturday, 12, 1863.

Came off picket fired at the target and hit it. Weather

Nothing of importance.

Monday, 14.

Detailed for provost gaurde did not go was wanted for a wittness at a Court Marshial but was not summoned so I did not go. Weather warm.

December, Tuesday, 15, 1863.

Weather warm and pleasant.

Wednesday, 16.

I have the dunb (?) ague.

Thursday, 17.

Reported to the Surgeon.

December, Friday, 18, 1863.

I still have the ague.

Saturday, 19.

I reported to the Sergion.

Sunday, 20.

I went on picket gaurde.

December, Monday, 21, 1863.

Came off gaurde. Weather very pleasant, a little cool at night.

Tuesday, 22.

I wrote home. I was send to Town on detached servis to gaurde the Division Forage.

Wednesday, 23.

I am at Capt. Fields headquarters.

December, Thursday, 24, 1863.

Nothing of importance.

Friday, 25.

Chrismast the day passed off very pleasant.

Saturday, 26.

Weather cold.

December, Sunday, 27, 1863.

Received a letter from home.
