Transcript of diary kept in 1863 by Thomas Armstrong, Company E,
_________ Iowa Volunteers. (Original diary in Dad's cedar chest.
Spelling and punctuation as in diary.)

 

July, 1863

July, Wednesday, 1.

We expect to march out to the Reg- to day or as soon as we are relieved.

Thursday, 2.

We took up the line of march at 7 o'clock and arrived at the Reg- at 11 o'clock.

July, Friday, 3, 1863.

Nothing of importance during the day at 9 o'clock we marched out to Black river and laid by for the night.

Saturday, 4.

The Enemy is past over on the other side of the river. Our Batterie shelled them for a while. Company E And D are on Picket duty to night. Vicksburg surrendered. 30,000 prisoners and 228 pieces of artilery.

Sunday, 5.

We returned to camp.

July, Monday, 6, 1863.

We received two months pay for the months of March and April. We settled up for Clothing to the 30th of Aprile. I received $9025 a balance due me on Clothing of $4.25.

Wednesday, 8.

Sherman And Ord. are moving out to Jackson to attack Johnson

July, Thursday, 9, 1863.

Friday, 10.

Saturday, 11.

We started to gaurde a Provision train through to Sherman. We arrived at Clinton (10 miles from Jackson) at Midnight. There we found two Reg- that had come back to help us through.

July, Sunday, 12, 1863.

We arrived at our lines (4 miles from Jackson) by 10 o'clock.

Monday, 13.

We started back with the train (at three o'clock) of 250 Wagons and 67 Prisoners. We arrived at Black river at sun down.

Tuesday, 14.

We are waiting for the train to load.

July, Wednesday, 15, 1863.

We got the train loaded at 4 o'clock and went out to Edwards station a distance of six miles.

Thursday, 16.

We got under way at an early hour. We are divided in squads of six to a wagon. We expect to be attacted. We got through to Clinton all safe and joined our Brigade and went into camp.

Friday, 17.

The Rebells evacuated Jackson last night.

July, Saturday, 18, 1863.

Sunday, 19.

Co. E went out on Picket.

Monday, 20.

Co. E. returned from Picket. We moved camp to a better Position. The 24th Iowa came in with 500 Prisoners and turned them over to us. We are under marching orders.

July, Tuesday, 21, 1863.

We took up the line of march at 2 o'clock and marched 5 miles and camped for the night.

Wednesday, 22.

On the road at daylight marched to Bakers Creek and camped for the night.

Thursday, 23.

On the road at daylight and went into camp three miles west of Big Black about noon.

July, Friday, 24, 1863.

Saturday, 25.

We moved back to the Big Black to gaurde the place.

Sunday, 26.

July, Monday, 27, 1863.

We was relieved at noon and marched at four o'clock. We marched four miles and camped for the night.

Tuesday, 28.

We arrived at Vicksburg and went into camp about noon three miles up the river from town.

Wednesday, 29.

July, Thursday, 30, 1863.

Friday, 31.

I was detailed to go to Yongs point for our tents but could not get to boat.
