Transcript of diary kept in 1863 by Thomas Armstrong, Company E,
_________ Iowa Volunteers. (Original diary in Dad's cedar chest.
Spelling and punctuation as in diary.)

 

March, 1863

March, Sunday, 1.

We had Regimental inspection today. The Col. said it was highly Satisfactory. The Weather is very pleasant.

March, Monday, 2, 1863.

We drew clothing this morning. I drew one Pair Pints and a haversack and a shirt. The weather is very pleasant.

Tuesday, 3.

I seen Wint (?) Clapp. He is well and heartie. The weather is fair.

Wednesday, 4.

I am camp gaurde to day. It is cloudy to day.

March, Thursday, 5, 1863.

I came off gaurde at 8 o'clock and went on Inspection at 8 o'clock. We sighned the pay roals this eavning.

Friday, 6.

All quiet in camp to day. Our brigade had the Resolutions read to us by Major Foster to send to the Citizens of Iowa to let them see that we are patriotic and they passed our Reg

unanimously.

Saturday, 7.

All quiet in camp nothing of importance transpired to day.

March, Sunday, 8, 1863.

Our Company is on Picket gaurde to it rained most of the night.

Monday, 9.

We came off Picket this morning. We can haiar heavy firing down the river.

Tuesday, 10.

Nothing of importance to day.

March, Wednesday, 11, 1863.

It rained most of the day.

Thursday, 12.

I was on gaurde to day. We two months pay for the months of September and October.

Friday, 13.

I came of gaurde this morning. The weather is very fair.

March, Saturday, 14, 1863.

Nothing of importance to day.

Sunday, 15.

I sent $18 home by ajatant Wilson. He was detailed to take the money home for this Brigade. He took $1150 for our company.

Monday, 16.

Wilson started home this morning the Water was let into the canal last night.

March, Tuesday, 17, 1863.

I was on camp gaurde to day the lake is raising very fast.

Wednesday, 18.

I came of camp gaurde this morning if the lake continues to rise we will have to leave her tomorrow.

Thursday, 19.

All quiet in camp the weather is very pleasant.

March, Friday, 20, 1863.

We had Regimental drill this forenoon in the afternoon we had company drill.

Saturday, 21.

We changed our oald guns for new Enfield Rifles. we moved our camp up the river four miles. We had to move on account of the water.

Sunday, 22.

I was on camp gaurde to day the weather is very wet.

March, Monday, 23, 1863.

I came of gaurd the weather very wet and cold.

Tuesday, 24.

All quiet in camp it is very cold for this time off year.

Wednesday, 25.

I went to fishing but did not catch any thing.

March, Thursday, 26, 1863.

We struck tents and went on board the Superior. We laid at the landing all night.

Friday, 27.

We shoved off this morning and went down the river seven miles to another camping ground.

Saturday, 28.

We fixed up our camp. In the Eavning it rained very hard. After it stoped raining we had a terable wind storm it blew most of the tents down in the Reg.

March, Sunday, 29, 1863.

The wind is blowing very hard yet. We are ordered to be ready for Inspection at four o'clock but we did not have it.

Monday, 30.

Nothing of importance to day.

Tuesday, 31.

Our company went on Picket gaurde to day. Nothing of importance transpired while we were on gaurde.
