Transcript of diary kept in 1863 by Thomas Armstrong, Company E,
_________ Iowa Volunteers. (Original diary in Dad's cedar chest.
Spelling and punctuation as in diary.)

 

May, 1863

May, Friday, 1, 1863.

Our teams returned this eavning.

Saturday, 2.

We received orders to drill two hours a day.

Sunday, 3.

No drill to day we had Company Inspection.

May, Monday, 4, 1863.

General Stealls division passed through for Carthage. Grand Gulf was taken this morning with 500 prisoners and 12 pieces of Artilery.

Tuesday, 5.

The 95th Iowa passed through today.

Wednesday, 6.

The Prisoners taken at Grand Gulf went past today they were a rugh set.

May, Thursday, 7, 1863.

Company drill in the forenoon. Battalion drill in the afternoon. 130 prisoners passed by enroute for Millikens Bend.

Friday, 8.

Company drill in the forenoon. Battalion drill in the afternoon.

Saturday, 9.

Seventy-five prisoners passed through. We prepaired for inspection tomorrow.

May, Sunday, 10, 1863.

Regimental inspection at 8 o'clock. Co E went out to strengthen them some fear of an attack. Orders to march at five o'clock tomorrow morning.

Monday, 11.

We took up the line of march at five o'clock for Carthage, marched 16 miles.

Tuesday, 12.

We took up the line of march at day light. We only marched 12 miles to day.

May, Wednesday, 13, 1863.

We took up the line of march and marched 4 miles to the landing where we got on board the boat and crost the river to grand gulf Miss.

Thursday, 14.

Nothing of importance. At night we had orders to have every thing in readiness to fall in at a moments warning.

Friday, 15.

Nothing of importance to day.

May, Saturday, 16, 1863.

Nothing of importance to day.

Sunday, 17.

We had Company inspection at one o'clock nothing of importance.

Monday, 18.

We went up the Black river to help the gunboats tear up a blockade the rebells had made acrost it with heavy timbers. We distroyed it in three hours.

May, Tuesday, 19, 1863.

Heavy firing in the direction of Vicksburg. At 11 o'clock at night we were ordered out and went on the boat and started across the river.

Wednesday, 20.

We arrived oposide Warrenton. We had to drop down to get out of range of the enemys guns. They had run out to shell us within the eavning. We came up and landed and marched crost the point and got on another boat. we laid there all night.

Thursday, 21.

Our Brigade went up the Yazoo river to Haines Bluff where we laid till noon when we went back to youngs point and marched acrost to the ferrie boat and crost the river to Warrenton. We then marched out three miles and laid there all night.

May, Friday, 22, 1863.

We moved forward to the Enemys lines where we Scirmished whith them all day we lost one man Killed and one Wounded both of Co. B.

Saturday, 23.

We went to the right further and reported to General McClernand and he sent us back to our place where we were yesterday.

Sunday, 24.

To day we were relieved by the 15th Iowa. Our Regiment was on the Advance for three days.

May, Monday, 25, 1863.

We were called out at 10 o'clock at night where we laid all night.

Tuesday, 26.

We marched to the center to report to General McPherson. He sends up with an expedition under General Blair, to look after Jo Johnson.

Wednesday, 27.

We marched 16 miles and camped after dark.

May, Thursday, 28, 1863.

We laid by untill noon waiting for rations. We marched 12 miles and went into camp at 8 o'clock at night. Water very scarce.

Friday, 29.

We marched 7 miles and found a fiew of the Enemy. We drove them off. Our Reg. was in the advance to support the Pickets.

Saturday, 30.

We got up at two o'clock and started for haines bluff. we marched 17 miles.

May, Sunday, 31. 1863.

Weather very hot. We marched 12 miles and camped at Haines bluff.
