Transcript of diary kept in 1863 by Thomas Armstrong, Company E,
_________ Iowa Volunteers. (Original diary in Dad's cedar chest.
Spelling and punctuation as in diary.)

 

April, 1863

April, Wednesday, 1, 1863.

We came in of Picket gaurde this morning.

Thursday, 2.

I went on camp gaurde this morning. We sighned the Pay roals to day.

Friday, 3.

I came of camp gaurde this morning the weather is butifull. I think the wet season is over and spring set in.

April, Saturday, 4, 1863.

I wrote a letter home to day.

Sunday, 5.

We had Regimental inspection to day by the Leut. Col.

Monday, 6.

Col. Hall returned this morning. We received a lot of Sanitary good from the state of Iowa.

April, Tuesday, 7, 1863.

The Sanitary good were given out to the company today.

Wednesday, 8.

We went to General McPherson's head quarters to hear a speach by General Thomas. He gave us a speach and also did General McPherson, Croakes Reede and Capt. Clink.

Thursday, 9.

We got four months pay to day. I got $22.60 here and $20.00 at home or at the branch bank at Muscatine, on the alotment roals.

April, Friday, 10, 1863.

I wrote a letter home to day and sent six dollars in it. We were mustered to find out how many men we wnated to fill it up to the maximum number.

Saturday, 11.

Nothing of importance to day.

Sunday, 12.

I am on camp gaurd to day.

April, Monday, 13, 1863.

I came off camp gaurd to day. The 24th Iowa passed going down the river. Cap'n Johnson came ashoar to see his son. I wrote a letter home to day.

Tuesday, 14.

Nothing of importance to day rained most all day.

Wednesday, 15.

Cleared up the weather is very warm and pleasant.

April, Thursday, 16, 1863.

Nothing of importance.

Friday, 17.

We had a grand review by General McArther it didn't pass off very well. Heavy canonading at Vixburgh the fleet running the Blocade.

Saturday, 18.

I was on camp gaurde today another review today.

April, Sunday, 19, 1863.

Nothing of importance.

Monday, 20.

Co E on Picket duty to day.

Tuesday, 21.

We cam of Picket this morning. We received marching orders in the fore noon. In the afternoon we went on board of the Platte Valey. We shoved of at 8 o'clock and went down the river 30 miles.

April, Wednesday, 22, 1863.

We disembarked and went into camp.

Thursday, 23.

We have marching orders.

Friday, 24.

We are still under marching orders.

April, Saturday, 25, 1863.

We received orders to get ready to march as soon as posable.

Sunday, 26.

We struck tents after breakfast. We don't take the tents with us. We took up the line of march at 4 o'clock for Carthage. We marched 8 miles and camped for the night.

Monday, 27.

We marched 3 miles when it commenced to rain. We got into an oald Cotton Gin where we stayed untill next morning.

April, Tuesday, 28, 1863.

We took up the line of march at 8 o'clock and marched 8 miles to Holmes Plantation where we will stay for a while to repair the roads which are very bad.

Wednesday, 29.

We sent our teams back to the river for Provisions.

Thursday, 30.

Nothing of importance the weather is very fair.
