Letter number five
Camp McClellan,
Davenport, I January 25
Well Mother, I set myself down to write you a few lines in answer to your
letter of the 20th. Mother I was glad to hear from home and to hear that you
was all well at that time. Mother today is is one of the pleasants days that
I ever saw for this time of year. It is warm enough to go in your shirt
sleeves. Mother I am about as well now as I was when I left home the first
time. Well Mother we get along very well in camp. We would get along better
if the weather was cooler. It rains every few days. The mud is about 6 inches
deep in camp, but a soldier must get use to that. Mother last Tuesday we took
a young solder to the cars? (not sure of this word). He went in the hospital
Saturday noon and died Monday noon. We buried a soldier last Tuesday and one
last Friday. One died last night. We will bury him tomorrow. There was about
40 old soldiers left this camp for their respective regt's. Well Mother it is
rather still for camp today for all of the band but one or two has gone over
the river. I got a letter from Sarah a few days since. I wrote John Bunn a
letter. I wrote Wm.Biddison a letter as soon as I came back. I got no answer
yet.Mother if Saul Heron will give you ten dollars in good money sell the
gun. I want to know how you are getting along since I left home. From F. W.
Kimble to his Mother.

one of them. I will send you this ring. Keep it till I come ome again.Eliza
