Letters of Francis William Kimble
14th Iowa Infantry, Company 'B'
Presented by the Iowa Civil War Site
Letter number forty-four
Well Eliza I expect that you think that F.W. is a getting love sick, but it
is a mistake as far as love is concerned. I expect that letter did sound
rather solemn to you for you haven't had one for so long. When I sat down to
write the last one I made up my mind that it was the last if I did not get an
answer for I have written her some two or three before I got an answer.
Besides I am rather inclined to think you will die an old maid unless that I
bring you a man home with me from the army For my part I feel quite light
hearted on the matrimony question for if I should fail one place I can fall
back to another, for instance, Miss Kirk. I am much pleased to learn that Mr.
Bean is married. There was a tremendous accident happened at the Charleston
depot this morning. Several of the Graybeard regt was detailed to guard the
train out to LaGrange and while standing on the platform of the depot the
cars came up and struck several of them, killing two on the spot and wounding
several more very bad. Eliza I had some Iowa cake this afternoon. One of the
musicians was home on furlough and he brought it to me. I would write more
but it is so dark that I cannot see what I am doing so I will bid you a Good
Knight. from Francis to Eliza
Transcribed and submitted by great great niece
