Presented by the Iowa Civil War Site

Letter number two

Camp Heron, Davenport, IA November 23
Well Mother I take my pen in hand to let you know where I am at present.
Mother you will see by this letter that I have changed my position. Well
Mother I suppose that you seen by that letter that I sent in Holcombs letter
that I was throwed out of the Graybeards Regt and I was not sorrow for I did
not like them very well. The adjudant general Baker of Iowa told us that we
might join another regt if we would so. There was sixteen of the boys
concluded they would go to Davenport so on evening we went up to Muscatine
and got aboard of the cars for Davenport. We got into Davenport at seven
o'clock that night. We went up to Camp Heron to stay all night. We stoped in
Company G in the thirty ninth regt, got our suppers and I have been staying
there ever since till this morning. I ate my breakfast at Company B in the
Fourteenth. There was four of us enlisted in the 14th Iowa yesterday. I guess
you have seen one of the boys. His name is W.C. Littlefield. He is connected
to Ommer Garrison that used to live in Iowaville. There is three of the boys
gone in Company G in the 39th regt. Well Mother I was in Camp McClellan and
saw the barricks that Jim Louis and the rest of the boys was in that went
from Iowaville. Well Mother I do not have anything to do but run around town.
I have been at the cavalry of the 6th Iowa which is about one half a mile
from here. Well Mother we will be mustered in and draw our pay in a few days.
We will get our pay from the time that we enlisted in the Graybeards regt.
Well Mother I am very well satisfied so far and I hope that I may still be
so. Well Mother I am well at present and hope that these few lines may find
you the same. I must bring my letter to a close by saying good bye. Direct
your letter to Camp Heron, Davenport, Ia. 14th regt in care of Captain
Currier..
