The Rensselaer Russell House is one of the oldest homes in Black Hawk County, an excellent American mid-Victorian architecture. Rensselaer Russell, left New York in 1857 and traveled to Waterloo Iowa, bringing his wife and daughter. He became a prominent local banker and investor in real estate. At the age of 33 he purchased the block which the Rensselaer House now sits for $750. The construction of the house was finally completed in 1861, at the then un-heard of cost of $5,878.83. The Russell house was considered a landmark and showplace of the area. Visitors are taken on guided tours through the authentic Victorian interior, with the original family belongings on display and can visit the Victorian gardens surrounding the home. Restored and preserved by the Association for the Preservation of the Rensselaer Russell House, the Junior League and the Waterloo Civic Foundation.
