The Waterloo Museum of Art is a permanent municipal and non-profit institution. Its purpose is to initiate and further community awareness and appreciation of the arts through acquiring, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art.

The Museum conducts a full museum program which includes the care of a significant permanent collection, the organization and mounting of approximately thirty-five exhibitions per year, and interpretation through an extensive education program that incorporates classes, workshops, lecture, film and music series, symposia and a tour program. The museum also presents an annual fine arts and craft sale scheduled traditionally during the holiday season.

The Waterloo Museum of Art is located in the Waterloo Recreation and Arts Center and is under the auspices of the Waterloo Recreation and Arts Commission. The center is evidence of the city's commitment to and support of arts and culture. It was built with donations from the public and private sector as well as the Art Museum houses the Hope Martin Theatre - home for the Waterloo Community Playhouse/ Black Hawk Children's Theatre, the Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Chorale and music, dance, theatre and art studios, workshops and rehearsal spaces.

EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Education Department plans a full schedule of classes and workshops in three sessions per year. Adult workshops and classes include film and lecture series and hands-on experiences in drawing painting, creative writing, lapidary and silversmithing, pottery and dance. Younger patrons may participate in dance and creative movement classes, youth music programs (band and orchestra), art classes, summer art camp and special theme workshops. Classes and workshops are also offered for special populations and senior adults. The Museum works in cooperation's with the schools to provide field experiences that meet curricular needs while enhancing the students' cultural education.

PERMANENT COLLECTION

The permanent collection was started in 1962 with the gift of a Marvin Cone painting "I have Loved the Unloved" from the Junior League. Through additional gifts the collections has developed in three directions - Midwestern paintings, drawings, original prints, photographs and sculpture; American Decorative Arts including pottery, jewelry, glass textiles and mixed media; and Caribbean and American folk art with an emphasis on Haitian paintings and sculpture.

The museum also owns a small but significant collection of Grant Wood drawings, original prints and paintings which are displayed in he The Grant Wood Gallery. Title to the collection is held by the Waterloo Civic Foundation. The collection grows through gifts of art and donations for purchase.

MEMBERSHIPS

Friends of the Art Museum

Friends of the Art Museum is the support organization for Waterloo Museum of Art. The Friends provide ongoing support for museum exhibitions, programs, collection and education. Past projects include the purchase of equipment and furnishings, works of art (additions) for the collection, sponsorship and coordination of fundraising events, hosting of special receptions for exhibition openings, funding of exhibitions, gallery programs, and in part summer art camp. There are four levels of membership; individual, family, senior citizen and corporate/sponsor. Members receive discounts on classes, trips and shop purchases as well as invitations to all museum events.

Northeast Iowa Print Club

The Print Club was started in 1985 by Waterloo Museum of Art in cooperation with the University of Northern Iowa Art Gallery. the club provides a wide variety of educational programs designed to stimulate an interest in printmaking and collection. Programs include presentations on printmaking techniques, care, conservation, collecting and history as well as visits to private and public collections and an annual trip.

MUSEUM SHOP

The Museum Shop, staffed by volunteers, offers for sale fine art and crafts by artists from all over the Midwest. Paintings, prints drawings and photographs may be rented for a nominal fee and the rental fee may be applied to the purchase. The shop carries a wide array of pottery, glass, wood, jewelry, prints, printings and unique Haitian objects.

ALLBEE ART LIBRARY

The Allbee Library contains books and periodicals related to the collection as well as a selection on American art and museum education. Library resources are available for research by arrangement.

GALLERIES

Raymond T. Forsberg Riverside Galleries

Exhibitions are planned to interpret and expand upon the permanent collection and focus on Midwest art, American crafts and Haitian and Caribbean art and artifacts. Exhibitions change every five weeks.

Reuling, Reddington and Grant Wood Galleries

Exhibitions incorporate selections from all segments of the permanent collection and are changed twice a year. The Mary Makepeace Law Court Theater, situated in the center of the galleries seats 68 patrons and offers an ideal space for interpretive programming.

Rotary-Lichty Galleries

Small exhibitions of selected permanent collection and special community outreach exhibits are displayed in these galleries.

Junior Art Gallery

Designed as an interactive, participatory exhibition with an emphasis on art and culture, each exhibit immerses the audience in an atmosphere and environment representative of the particular subject being presented. Exhibition subjects have ranged from abstract concepts of form and illusion to cultural/environmental exhibits which have included Japan, Mexico, Africa, the Italian Renaissance, and the USSR. From October through May each year over 13,000 young people and adults tour the Gallery. A related craft activity is available to further enhance this unique program.

Sunday, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Junior Art gallery is open each first and third Sunday of the month from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. or by appointment.

The Museum Shop is open Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Admission is free; donations are accepted.

The Waterloo Museum of Art is a member of Resources Plus:The Cedar Valley Cultural Council, Iowa Museum Association, and the Midwest Museums Conference.
