The Iowa State Horticultural Society was founded in 1866 for the purpose of promoting and encouraging horticulture and its related interests in Iowa,
through the collection and dissemination of information concerning production, marketing and utilization of horticultural and related crops. Currently, the Iowa State Horticultural Society consists of 23 affiliated organizations that all represent and promote a specific sector of horticulture. A listing of the organizations that are currently members of the ISHS, along with the name of the President for each group, can be found on the back of this informational sheet.
The Society does not offer individual memberships to the public. A person who is a member of any one of the 23 affiliate associations is automatically a member of the ISHS. They may participate in any Society function and have full voting privileges at the annual meeting. A Board of Directors governs the activities and functions of the Society. Each affiliate appoints two representatives to the Board. In addition, there are several at-large and ex-officio positions on the Board. The general membership elects the Board's executive officers every two years during the Society's annual meeting and awards ceremony.
The ISHS is involved in promoting the horticultural industry as a means of diversifying agriculture in Iowa. The Society also supports the many noncommercial, avocation interest groups throughout the state. The ISHS acts as a liaison between its affiliate membership, the legislative branch, state and federal government agencies and Iowa State University. In recent years, members of the Society have become increasingly active in the public policy arena where horticultural interests are of concern.
The Society publishes a quarterly magazine, The Iowa Horticulturist. This magazine offers articles of interest to both professionals and recreational gardeners throughout the state. Staff members of Iowa State University's Horticulture Department and Extension and the State Horticulturist's Office frequently contribute articles to the publication. Activities of the Society are all internally funded. The ISHS does not maintain a dues structure. All monies are raised through Society activities, magazine subscriptions, affiliate contributions, and private donations.
