7th Iowa Cavalry at Camp Rankin

The 7th Iowa Cavalry, armed with the Gallagher single shot rifle got gut shot during the early winter of 1865 at a place called Camp Rankin on the South Platte several miles west of Iowa.

Roman Nose, George Bent and a thousand Cheyennes extracted partial revenge for the Sand Creek Massacre of 29 November 1864.

Lt.Eugene Ware had mustered into Colonel Summers' 7th Iowa at the town of Burlington, Iowa. Ware wasn't at Camp Rankin, however, being at Cottonwood on business.

Captain O'Brien led his ill fated 7th Iowa command outside the sod walls of Rankin and onto the pages of history.
