5th Iowa Infantry

Andrew Soll

This is the summary of my research on Andrew Soll who I believe is
gg-uncle to me. He served in Co K, 5 Reg't Iowa Infantry, was wounded
and later served as Pvt in Co "D" 1 Infantry Mississippi Marine Brigade
Joseph Zoll (my great grandfather) and John (his brother) left Germany
in 1844 and orginally
settled in New York City. We know that there eight siblings total but
currently we don't know of more than these two or three. Joseph and
John moved to Lansing Iowa in 1853. Their last name in the 1860 census
in Lansing was spelled Soll. Also listed in the 1860 census in Lansing
is an Andrew Soll, fireman. We assume he was a brother of John and
Joseph but we have no hard evidence of it at this time. Joseph bought a
farm in Iowa and lived on it and in his old age moved to Lansing and
died there in 1903. John moved to Volga, South Dakota and farmed there
and died in 1909. Both men later changed the Soll name to Zoll.
Andrew enlisted into the army from Lansing in 1861.

special order from Secr'y of War."
Muster-in as Pvt to Co "D" 1 Infantry Mississippi Marine Brigade on Feb
9 1863 at Benton Bks
Mo. His enlistment paper listed his occupation as farmer, born in
Germany aged 26 years and shows him making his mark "x" on the 14 Jan
1863. He has grey eyes, dark hair, dark complexion and is 5' 4" high.

Commodore Davis Dixon Porter formed a "Mississippi River Brigade" in
Oct 62 (I think under
Navy auspicies). Members were recruited from invalids and convalescents
in hospitals around St. Louis. Recruiting was done by Alfred Ellet. It
was an elite Brigade. They had the following boats; Autocrat, BJ Adams,
Baltic, Diana, Fairchild, John Raine and Woodford.
Organized and trained by Lt Col George Currie. They had 6 Co of
Infantry and 4 Squad of
Cavalry. They served in the Vicksburg Campaign.
"Thunder Along the Mississippi" by Jack D. Coomde

Absent sick on hospital boat Woodford Sept 1, 1863, Returned Dec 7,
1863.
Assigned from Co. "D" to Co. "E" on Aug 26, 1864.
    Muster-out Jan, 18 1865 at Vicksburg, Miss.
On Aug 5, 1865 there was a letter written in his behalf by M. M.
Webster from Lansing to the
Provost Marshall Dubuque requesting a certificate of re-enlistment so he
could get re-enlistment bounty from the board of supervisors.
The next contact was an Declaration for Orginal Pension of an Invalid
filed on 11 March 1879 in Galesberg, Illinois. Andrew declared that
since leaving the service he has resided mostly at Lansing, Iowa and
Galesburg Ill and listed his occupation as farming some and other
occupations. His age was 43, 5' 6" high, complexion as dark, hair brown
and eyes grey. He signed the form with his name.
The Examining Surgeon's Certificate dated Feb 13, 1884 listed him as 48
years of age, weighing 140 lbs, 5' 6" height, pulse rate is 80,
respiration 20 and temperature 98.5.
Approved for 1/2 disability on May 25, 1884 worth $4/month. At that
time he was in Lansing,
Iowa.
The next and last item in his pension folder was a "Declaration for the
Increase of an Invalid Pension" filed from Walsh county of the Territory
of Dakota on 17th April, 1886. He was listed as a resident of Park
River, aged 49 years. He believed himself to be entitled to an increase
of pension on account of "Increased disability and Lung Disease".

Nowhere in the records are any indication that he was married or had
children.
