John S.Ferguson

Joined active Union Forces in 1862 enlisting in Co.F of the 28th Iowa Infantry.The following was copied from his obituary that appeared in The Daily Constitution Democrat of Keokuk, IA., Dec. 6, 1915

"With his company, Private Ferguson went into camp at Iowa City and later at Davenport. Thence he was sent to Helena, Ark. and there first saw active service in battle. He arrived at Vicksburg, Miss. at the beginning of the siege and was engaged there until the surrender of the city to General Grant. Preceeding immediately to New Orleans his regiment lost heavily in the battle of Lake Ponchartrain. He was a member of the Red River expedition which, starting in March 1864, fought its way over bitterly contested ground as far as Pleasant Hill, where a fierce engagement took place. At Sabine crossroads, he sustained the loss of his right arm and thirteen other wounds and was, as a result, taken prisoner by the enemy. He was held as a prisoner of war at Mansfield, LA. utterly without medical assistance or care of any kind, suffering from hunger and having for a bed only the bare floor of his prison--."

After release from the Confederate Prison, John S. Ferguson was sent to the Estes House Hospital at Keokuk where his wife brought their one(1) year old daughter, Clara (my wife's grandmother) to see her wounded father. They traveled by river boat from Muscatine to Keokuk. J.S.Ferguson was discharged 28 July 1864 at Keokuk. The 28th Regiment Infantry history is recorded in the Compendium of the War of the Rebellion book, as is most other Iowa military histories of the war.
